How to work with Promo Models and Brand Ambassadors Part 1

How to work with Promo Models and Brand Ambassadors Part 1

Ok, so you've ordered the tents, you've got the signage, and the fulfillment house has boxes and bags and promotional items and giveaways on their way.

The tables are getting set up, the tablecloths are out.

Now its time to motivate and manage your front line staff.
That is,...your promo models and Brand Ambassadors.

Whats that you say?
You shouldnt have to manage them or motivate these spokesmodels?

Au Contraire Pierre!

Let's take a gander at your situation.

Promo Models and Brand Ambassadors are part of our ever expanding gig economy.
They are the backbone of live events and promotional giveaways.

And, they generally have a significant amount of flexibility and freedom in their lives.
Freedom from a steady 9 to 5 job where a supervisor directs them, computer algorithms track them and the timeclock determines their moves.

You don't have that steady 9 to 5 worker bee.

What you may have, sometimes, is more like the Wild, Wild West.

Because for these live event staff--there's always a 'new Sherriff in town.'

They don't always get up at 7am.
They don't always report for duty.
They don't always listen to a supervisor telling them what to do.

They're independent. As in Independent Contractors.

Now, if you've ever tried to build an addition to your home, you know all about independent contractors.
They may show up on Tuesday...or they may not.

And lest we forget, there are many fine, upstanding Spokesmodels and Promo Staff, Brand Ambassadors who DO the work, who DO show up on time and DO make you proud. This article is NOT about those folks.

So, whether you like it or not--it's important to motivate and manage and sometimes, yes, coddle, these independent spokesmodels. Why?

Because you want your event to go off without a hitch.

Yes, Jane is being a crybaby over when her lunchbreak happens and that she can't take it with her friend Kristen.

Yes, Tommy feels he needs to go the bathroom 3 times before noon.

Yes, Daphne is forgetting to smile at consumers.

Welcome to Live Events Staffing!

Now, certainly you can be right, correct and fair and fire all 3 of these folks, but remember you may just get 3 more just like them--or worse.

Here's the dirty little secret. Most promotional companies cannot afford to do a work background check on these promo staff.  So all they have to go on is their interview behavior.

And anybody can behave...for a little while.

So, yes, sometimes you will find these impish darlings acting out on the job.
And now it's your job to corral these folks and get them to focus on why their there. To represent you and your client's brand.

So here is your PROMO MODEL STAFFING HINT #1

Use the COMPLIMENT SANDWICH.
The Compliment Sandwich is when you approach someone to whom you have to give a correction or criticism.  Instead of point blank telling them what they are doing wrong, you wrap your critique (the meat of the sandwich) in 2 pieces of 'compliment' bread.

Here's the Scenario:
Terence is talking too much with Jonathan at the promo table.

Wrong Approach:
"Terence, you're talking to Jonathan too much. This isnt conversation hour. I'm not paying you to talk to him.  Please focus on the consumers."

Compliment Sandwich:
Terence I love how the table is set up and youre uniform looks great. And I want to encourage you to talk more with the consumers. I notice you're talking more to Jonathan. You've been doing a great job so far so that would really make a difference.

Does it take a little more effort? Yes.
Does it prevent you from the short term satisfaction of raging out at Terence
Yes.
It also prevents the long term dissatisfaction of Mary walking off the job.

Remember most promo companies wont have another spokesmodel waiting in the wings (without payment for standby), so it's more beneficial to help the spokesmodel do the work correctly.

We'll have more Hints, Tips and Tricks for working with Booth Staff, Promo Models, Promotional Staff, and Brand Ambassadors. So keep watching this blog.
